Abstract

Scientists of Hohenheim University and Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology together with industrial partners focus on improvement of sustainability of biogas production. Therefore all single process steps, beginning with the plant production to the recycling of occurring residuals, are under investigation. Besides the sustainable generation of electricity and heat the production of customized fertilizers, base chemicals for industrial purposes as well as an optimized plant production system are major objectives of the project.
Biologically derived methane – biomethane – plays an important role in meeting global energy demands. The various interactions between microorganisms at the molecular level, are still unclear. A full understanding of the complete molecular processes in order to optimize microbe populations requires the interpretation of large volumes of complex DNA data representing diverse microbial genomes and strains as well as their RNA data to resolve the transcriptional profile and activities along the fermentation process.
The processing of waste and by-products including extraction methods from silage derived organic acids, drying technology considering emissions and recomposition of the remaining components to specially customized fertilizers, is documented via LCA analyses for defined scenarios. The production of base chemicals in suitable amounts from the ensiling processes is expected to meet the future demand of industrial precursors and allows the development of customized fertilizers to close the nutrient cycle for plant production.
